severing the ties that bind her

She looks out to the ocean, and wonders what she was thinking.
The humidity of the velvet night, with an old friend to meet.
Black asphalt, cracked and broken.
White stripes of parking places jump out, splashed with dim yellow glow.
He moves foward, and she smiles to say hello.
To him, the smile means something else.
Idle chatter dies down, and she glances at the clock.
So late it is early, with the stars glittering in the sky.
Too fast, too swift, the friend melts away.
A stranger takes his place.
(Slowly, the first bond begins to stretch, and is pulled taut.)
She pulls away, and is clear in her decision.
The stranger is still there.
So she holds him back in the strange world of car seats and false leather and bitter black pavement.
(The bond rips. Tears away.)
She leaves several minutes later, wondering what she was thinking.
(She doesn't know it yet, but she is free).
The bonds are broken.
She hopes it will be enough to keep her away.
